Trip to Flensburg

Living all the way south in Germany (almost in Austria) and then having to travel up north (to the border to Denmark) makes you appreciate how big Germany really is. Not that it compares to the US but it was an hour to the airport, an other hour by plane to Hannover and then another 3 1/2 by car until we got to Flensburg. Mike had already been busy up there since Thursday and Oma's appartment was almost cleared when I showed up with Mara and Heike. Most of her stuff had been given away to charity or people who needed it and we then had to look through the rest to clear out what goes into trash and what we would like to keep. Old pictures, documents and other stuff could be found everywhere in her appartment. She did have dementia to some degree. Her rental agreement was sitting between her crossword puzzle magazines in the kitchen. Other important documents where spread out in the most unlikely spots. The funeral was short and only family and neighbors showed up. We were not sure if she had friends left in town. It was a very sad moment but on the other hand she had not suffered and passed away at home. Who knows what will happen to us when we get old.
This week Oma Heike is watching the kids. Johanna is off school again for easter holidays. I took the next week off. Let's see what we can do then. Maybe take some short trips somewhere.
